Stacks of Renown

Why We Love Renown

As we’ve been putting the finishing touches on Alynthia, we’re reflecting on some aspects of our game that we’re most proud of. While there are certainly many things we could mention, one that we absolutely must “Focus” on is the one-of-a-kind point system, Renown. Whether you’re seeking to destroy the dragons’ nests in an epic cooperative game or claim victory in an aggressive competitive match, Renown is pivotal to nearly every aspect of Alynthia. Here are a few reasons why we love it!

It Amplifies the Story

The whole idea behind Renown is that you’re trying to earn the respect of the Alynthian people. By slaying dragons and rebuilding civilization, you will slowly gain renown and support from the populace. Unlike many games that incorporate a scoring system (with no contextual significance), Alynthia offers a distinct concept that both tracks your in-game progress and also makes sense within the story’s setting.

Cooperative and Competitive

Mechanically speaking, Renown represents your victory point” and is essential to win Alynthia, regardless of game mode. In competitive, you’re seeking to have the most Renown at the game’s end. In cooperative, everyone must pool their Renown together in order to defeat the dragons’ nests, which increase in cost throughout the game as it gets progressively harder to rally people to your cause. Renown can be earned in several ways, including building/upgrading outposts, defeating dragons, and purchasing cards. So, while its core mechanics remain the same, Renown shows its versatility by serving different functions in each mode.

Victory Points as a Resource

Beyond simply being a score tracker, Renown is also a spendable resource. In addition to spending it on nests in cooperative mode, you also may choose to give up two Renown, rather than one worker, any time you attack. Although the people consider this the cowardly route, it may sometimes be necessary when workers aren’t available. This alternative, combined with cooperative’s required Renown costs, forces you to manage your resources effectively to get the maximum utility out of your Renown. A single choice between spending Renown or not can make all the difference between a win and a loss, and it’s that kind of tension that makes Alynthia so engaging!
